A Burmese state-run newspaper says there is what it calls “a plot” to exploit a recent deadly incident north of Rangoon to provoke anti-government riots.
The incident occurred last Saturday in the town of Bago, where two young men were shot and killed when soldiers opened fire after a traffic accident.
The New Light of Myanmar newspaper described the incident as nothing more than “a drunken brawl,” and claimed some elements would try and exploit the tragedy. It did not elaborate.
The paper said a lawsuit has been filed against the soldiers involved.
Burma’s military government does not tolerate dissent and crushed pro-democracy protests in 2007.
The junta will hold elections in November, the first in more than two decades. Pro-democracy activists say the elections are a sham.
